Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan’s Prosecutor General’s Office has backed the position of the Cultural Heritage Agency on preserving historic House No. 7 on Babur Street in Tashkent. The supervisory authority has filed a lawsuit seeking to declare unlawful a decision by a former hokim concerning the property, the Prosecutor General’s Office press service said.
Earlier, the Cultural Heritage Agency formally appealed to the Prosecutor General’s Office to provide a legal assessment of decisions made in previous years that, in the agency’s view, posed a threat to the preservation of the historic building.
The Prosecutor General’s Office supported the agency’s position and initiated court proceedings. The case is currently under consideration by the court.
Elmurad Nazhimov, First Deputy Head of the Cultural Heritage Agency, said that preserving historical and cultural heritage is a duty of citizens under Article 61 of Uzbekistan’s Constitution.
He stressed that legal requirements apply to everyone and that actions aimed at destroying the country’s cultural heritage for personal gain must be stopped strictly within the framework of the law.
