Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding between the countries’ regulatory authorities on radiation and nuclear safety. The document provides for expanded information and expert exchanges between the sides, the information service of the Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety said.
The memorandum was signed as part of the participation of the Uzbek delegation in the 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The document covers cooperation in radiation and nuclear safety, licensing and inspection activities, improvement of the regulatory and legal framework, and emergency preparedness and response.
It also provides for professional training and the exchange of experience between the regulatory authorities of the two countries.
The document was signed for Uzbekistan by A. Rafikov, chairman of the Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety. The United States was represented by H.K. Nieh, chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
The memorandum is expected to contribute to the development of information and expert cooperation and to ensuring safety in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
