Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A delegation from Uzbekistan participated in the 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held in Vienna from 14 to 18 September, the information service of the Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety said.
Representatives of 181 IAEA member states took part in the international forum. The conference agenda covered nuclear and radiation safety, the peaceful use of nuclear energy, international cooperation and improvements in regulatory practices.
On the sidelines of the session, Abdluvakkos Rafikov, chairman of the Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety, held a number of bilateral meetings with foreign counterparts.
In particular, talks with Andrea Beatrix Kadar, head of Hungary’s regulatory authority, and Alexander Ivanitsky, head of Belarus’ regulatory authority, focused on nuclear and radiation safety, state regulation of the sector and the exchange of best practices.
Particular attention was given to effective oversight, licensing, inspection activities, radiation monitoring and emergency preparedness.
Uzbekistan is continuing to improve its national regulatory framework for the use of nuclear energy.
The Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety has been tasked with exercising state oversight over compliance with safety requirements, licensing and updating the relevant regulatory and legal framework.
The establishment of the Scientific and Technical Center for Radiation and Nuclear Safety under the Committee has expanded opportunities for scientific and expert support for the sector.
The bilateral meetings held during the session formed part of Uzbekistan’s efforts to further develop its national nuclear and radiation safety system in line with international standards and global best practices.
