Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The launch of the Mazar-i-Sharif - Kabul - Peshawar railway will become an important milestone in the revival of the historical interconnectedness of the cities of Termez and Peshawar. Shabir Ahmad Khan, Director of the Center for Central Asian Studies at Peshawar University, said this during a video conference on the topic "Uzbekistan - Pakistan: Prospects for Mutually Beneficial Cooperation".
According to the expert, in recent years, Uzbekistan and Pakistan have taken unprecedented steps towards ensuring trans-regional integration between Central and South Asia, actively involving Afghanistan in these processes. The implementation of these plans is becoming a cornerstone in the socio-economic reconstruction of Afghanistan.
The Pakistani scientist, emphasizing the growing role of Tashkent and Islamabad in strengthening trans-regional ties, called for intensifying interaction in building a strong network of transport and communication interconnection through the Afghan territory, the key component of which is the Mazar-i-Sharif-Kabul-Peshawar railway project. As Shabir Ahmad Khan noted, its launch will certainly become an important milestone in the revival of the historical interconnectedness of the cities of Termez and Peshawar, which in the era of the ancient Silk Road were prosperous cities and centers of a single cultural, civilizational and economic space.
At the same time, Shabir Ahmad Khan points out, such areas as agriculture (gardening, cotton processing) and pharmaceuticals can become promising areas for building up further cooperation between Islamabad and Tashkent.
The event, organized on 15 April by the Institute for Strategic and Interregional Studies under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, together with the Center for Global and Strategic Studies of Pakistan, was attended by prominent scientists and experts from leading research institutes and think tanks of the two countries.
