Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan and Latvia are implementing an experience-sharing programme focused on food safety, phytosanitary control and the development of agricultural exports. The project aims to improve Uzbekistan’s national system based on international practices, the Uzbekistan Food Safety Agency said.
With the support of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the project “Development of the Production and Export of Safe Food Products in Uzbekistan” is being implemented.
As part of the programme, Uzbek specialists are in Riga from 21 to 25 September to study Latvia’s experience in organising phytosanitary export control, plant protection and quarantine, as well as ensuring food safety.
Particular attention is being paid to modern digital tools for control and monitoring and the possibilities of applying them in Uzbekistan.
The training programme covers the development of food security and sustainable agriculture, support for farms, the introduction of scientific and innovative approaches, and agricultural production in line with international requirements.
Latvian specialists are also presenting practical approaches to identifying, monitoring and forecasting the spread of harmful organisms, assessing risks and organising phytosanitary control in different regions using modern information systems.
The agency noted that adopting such approaches can help improve the plant protection system, prevent the spread of harmful organisms, conduct timely monitoring and take the necessary phytosanitary measures.
According to the agency, as cooperation develops and the relevant approaches are introduced, Uzbekistan’s exports of fruit and vegetable products to Latvia reached €7 million in 2025.
The programme is expected to contribute to further exchange of expertise between specialists from the two countries, the adoption of modern technologies and the development of a system for producing and exporting safe agricultural products in Uzbekistan.
