Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan and Germany intend to expand cooperation in environmental protection and climate change through new joint projects, according to the National Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Ecology and Climate Change.
The issues were discussed by Iskandar Kutbiddinov, deputy chairman of the National Committee, and Stefan Mayer, a member of Germany’s Bundestag and the Foreign Affairs Committee.
The sides reviewed cooperation under regional programs, environmental monitoring, biodiversity conservation, and scientific and educational cooperation.
The Uzbek side presented ongoing environmental reforms and state policy priorities, including improving air quality, preserving biodiversity, enhancing waste management, expanding greening efforts and developing environmental education.
Particular attention was paid to the GIZ Green Central Asia initiative and the regional ILUCA program. Within these areas, the sides proposed implementing practical projects, exchanging technologies and jointly training specialists.
Uzbekistan also proposed launching a pilot project for digital monitoring of specially protected natural areas using SMART patrolling, camera traps, geoinformation technologies and artificial intelligence.
The sides also discussed cooperation with German expert and scientific organizations to preserve saiga migration routes and attract technical and methodological support.
In education, the sides proposed expanding cooperation between Green University and German universities and scientific organizations, organizing joint summer schools and exchanges of teachers and students, and conducting joint research.
Another initiative involves expanding German-language instruction at 14 “green” technical colleges affiliated with Green University.
Stefan Mayer expressed readiness to facilitate contacts with German partners and support the establishment of German-language centers and classrooms at the technical colleges.
The sides agreed to develop exchanges of experts in environmental regulation, certification, standardization, the introduction of best available technologies, the circular economy and waste management.
They also proposed increasing the participation of German companies and scientific organizations in the international environmental exhibition Eco Expo Central Asia 2027, which is planned to be held in Tashkent.
Following the meeting, the sides agreed to continue joint projects under GIZ programs, expand cooperation in digital monitoring and scientific and educational activities, and develop partnerships in green technologies.
