Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A “Green Wave” traffic light synchronization system has been introduced on a two-kilometer section of road between Furkat Street and Shota Rustaveli Street in Tashkent, reducing travel time during peak hours from nine to seven minutes.
Specialists from the Tashkent City Traffic Management Center adjusted the traffic lights based on the direction of traffic flows during morning and evening hours. The system is designed for an average speed of around 45–55 km/h.
In the morning, the “Green Wave” operates from Furkat Street toward Shota Rustaveli Street. In the evening, synchronization works in the opposite direction, from Shota Rustaveli Street toward Furkat Street.
Following the adjustments, travel time on the congested section fell by two minutes, from nine to seven minutes, representing a reduction of about 22%.
The improvement is not achieved by increasing vehicle speeds but by synchronizing adjacent intersections. Coordinated traffic lights allow vehicles to move more smoothly, reducing the number of stops, repeated braking and acceleration.
For comparison, the section normally takes six to seven minutes to cover when traffic is free-flowing. After the “Green Wave” was introduced, travel time during peak hours is also around seven minutes.
Thus, synchronizing nine traffic light installations along the two-kilometer section has reduced travel time during congested periods by almost a quarter.
Work to sequentially adjust and synchronize traffic lights on Tashkent’s streets is continuing.
