Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan has launched a pilot project to collect and recycle used packaging through automated reverse vending machines, known as fendomats. Users can receive 150 soums for each plastic, glass or aluminum container they return, the Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development said.
The project was implemented by the agency in cooperation with Norwegian company TOMRA, which specializes in automated waste collection and sorting technologies. The initiative introduces international approaches to the separate collection of packaging and its subsequent recycling.
Used containers can be placed in the special machines separately from other household waste. Users have two options for receiving or using the reward.
Under the first option, 150 soums is credited for each accepted container and transferred to an electronic Click wallet. Under the second option, the accumulated amount can be donated to charity.
Proceeds from the collected packaging are also planned to be used for charitable projects and tree-planting initiatives.
Materials collected through the fendomats are sent for recycling and can be used as secondary raw materials to manufacture new products. The approach is intended to reduce the consumption of natural resources and decrease the amount of waste ending up on streets, in waterways and at landfills.
The project also aims to encourage residents to develop the habit of sorting waste and raise environmental awareness. Another objective is to demonstrate the economic value of used packaging as a resource that can be reused.
If the pilot project proves effective, the authorities plan to gradually expand the network of fendomats by installing them in high-traffic locations and other regions of Uzbekistan.
