Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Tashkent plans to complete the first stage of a bus rapid transit (BRT) project on Shahrisabz Street by 1 September, the Tashkent Traffic Management Centre said.

The approximately 1.2-km section runs from the intersection of Shahrisabz, Mirabad and Shota Rustaveli streets to Amir Temur Avenue near the Museum of Arts.

The next stage will cover the remaining section of Shahrisabz Street to its next intersection with Amir Temur Avenue, near the Wyndham hotel. From there, the line is planned to continue towards Yunusabad.

Work on the first section began on 24 July. Completion was initially planned for the first week of August, but the timeline was extended because the roadbed is being completely reconstructed.

The Traffic Management Centre said the road structure had to be fully replaced to account for future traffic loads. Large, heavy buses are expected to operate regularly on the dedicated lane, requiring particular attention to the strength and durability of the road foundation.

During construction, the road surface is being excavated to a depth of more than 2 metres, after which the foundation is being rebuilt. The structure is intended to prevent moisture from accumulating beneath the road and reduce the risk of soil movement and subsidence.

A water-permeable geotextile material is being placed between the road surface layers. It is designed to maintain the specified structure and thickness of the layers and increase the stability of the road foundation.

The first BRT section is planned to have six passenger platforms. The dedicated bus lane will be physically separated from the rest of the roadway by curbs, which is intended to prevent other vehicles from entering it.

The project continues the development of dedicated bus lanes in Tashkent. In 2025, the first section of a dedicated bus lane in Uzbekistan running along the centre of a street was launched on Shota Rustaveli Street. It is approximately 7 km long.

The BRT corridor is planned to eventually run along Yangi Sergeli and Shota Rustaveli streets, Shahrisabz Street and Amir Temur Avenue.

The total length of the corridor will be 16.3 km. The Tashkent city administration presented the relevant project in April 2026.
