Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has outlined the country’s priorities for its 2027 chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Speaking at an expanded session of the CIS summit, attended by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as an honorary guest, Mirziyoyev identified the main areas of focus for the upcoming chairmanship: the economy, technology, transport, security, education, science and human capital development.
Mirziyoyev thanked the leaders of CIS member states for supporting Uzbekistan’s chairmanship and said the country intended to focus on initiatives capable of delivering practical results.
The chairmanship’s motto will be “CIS — A Space of Trust and Shared Development”. According to the president, preparations for the chairmanship concept and action plan are nearing completion, with the plan already containing more than 100 initiatives.
Political Dialogue and Economic Cooperation
Mirziyoyev identified maintaining political dialogue among CIS countries as one of the key priorities. He stressed the importance of openly discussing common issues and seeking mutually acceptable solutions amid an increasingly complex international environment.
In the economic sphere, Uzbekistan proposes placing greater emphasis on industrial cooperation. The president noted that CIS countries have substantial production capacity, resources, technologies and markets.
In his view, establishing joint ventures and reliable supply chains would enable countries to make more effective use of this potential. Further removal of barriers to mutual trade would also be essential.
Another priority is the development of digital technologies and the building of expertise in fields expected to shape economic competitiveness in the coming years. Mirziyoyev highlighted critical minerals, artificial intelligence, robotics, new materials and advanced energy technologies. He called on CIS countries to develop joint projects and strengthen their own technological capabilities.
Transport and Security
Transport cooperation will be another priority. The president noted Central Asia’s growing role as a transport hub connecting East and West, as well as North and South. To realise this potential, he proposed simplifying transit procedures and developing convenient, safe and economically viable routes.
Uzbekistan also intends to support cooperation among relevant CIS bodies responsible for security.
Mirziyoyev identified terrorism, extremism and cybercrime as common threats and stressed the need for joint countermeasures. Particular attention will be paid to cybercrime, which affects individuals, businesses, the banking sector and government systems.
Human Capital and Humanitarian Ties
The president also highlighted the development of people-to-people contacts among the priorities of Uzbekistan’s chairmanship. He said students, young professionals, scientists, researchers and representatives of creative professions should have more opportunities to exchange experience, study and work together.
Mirziyoyev stressed that cooperation should remain centred on people, their dignity, interests and opportunities. Uzbekistan’s chairmanship, he said, would seek to preserve effective formats of cooperation while giving fresh impetus to areas requiring additional solutions.
At the end of his remarks, the president thanked Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov for his hospitality and for organising the summit.
Following the meeting, a package of agreements and decisions was signed covering priority areas of cooperation within the CIS.
