Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzmetkombinat JSC is modernising the gas cleaning system at its electric steelmaking facility. The project is estimated to cost about US$5 million, with major works scheduled for completion by 15 December 2026, the company’s press service reported.
The programme is being implemented as the company addresses violations identified by Uzbekistan’s National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change during an inspection conducted from 15 to 23 October 2026.
Following a technical audit carried out by the company’s specialists with the involvement of relevant organisations, a project was developed to upgrade the gas cleaning complex. It includes modernising exhaust fans and the filtration system, cooling waste gases, improving dust collection and reconstructing the gas exhaust ductwork.
To date, the company has replaced 8,400 bag filters with units more resistant to high temperatures, installed three new high-capacity exhaust fans, cleaned gas ducts and fitted three emergency valves.
Work is continuing on the installation of a convective gas cooling system, the expansion and sealing of the extraction hood above the electric arc furnace, and increasing the capacity of the dust collection hopper. About 90 specialists are involved in the project, working two shifts without interrupting the main production process.
According to the company, the current dust collection efficiency stands at 95.8%. The target is to increase it to 98% once the modernisation is complete.
However, the final results, including compliance with standards for dust and gaseous pollutant emissions, must be confirmed through instrumental measurements and inspections by authorised bodies.
In parallel, Uzmetkombinat is continuing to expand green spaces across its industrial facilities and urban areas. The company says it has planted about 300,000 trees and shrubs over the past three years. It has also established an eco-zone and is developing the UMK O‘zLiDeP park, while carrying out activities under the Yashil Makon programme.
Nariman Umerov, head of the project office, said the company was making efforts to address the environmental problem and intended to fulfil the tasks set.
The company emphasised that landscaping complements technical environmental protection measures but does not replace the need to reduce industrial emissions.
