Uzbekistan, World Bank Review Reforms and Projects

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 15 April, a meeting was held between World Bank Group President Ajay Banga and Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Jamshid Kuchkarov.

The meeting was attended by World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Antonella Bassani, Vice President for Development Finance Akihiko Nishio, Managing Director for Operations Anna Bjerde, as well as Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Ilkhomjon Umrzakov and other officials.

The sides held an in-depth exchange of views on the development of bilateral cooperation, as well as on large-scale socio-economic transformations being implemented in Uzbekistan and measures aimed at improving living standards.

Special attention was focused on key areas of cooperation, including ensuring sustainable economic growth, modernization of industries and infrastructure development, and efforts to reduce poverty.

The expansion of cooperation within the International Development Association (IDA) was also discussed, including more effective use of concessional financing instruments.

Substantial emphasis was placed on water resource management, climate change adaptation, and strengthening environmental sustainability, including cooperation under the Water Forward initiative.

The parties also reviewed prospects for the development of small and medium-sized businesses and further support for the private sector.

At the conclusion of the talks, participants confirmed their intention to deepen mutually beneficial partnership, expand the portfolio of joint projects, and advance initiatives in priority areas.

Representatives of the World Bank stated their readiness to continue supporting reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan.
