Uzbekistan and China Expand Ecological and Climate Science Ties
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — An Uzbek delegation led by Presidential Advisor on Environmental Issues and Chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change Aziz Abdukhakimov participated in the first meeting of the Dialogue Mechanism for Heads of Government Scientific Research Institutions of the People's Republic of China and Central Asian Countries.
The event, held at the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography in Urumqi, established a new platform for developing regional scientific cooperation.
Opening the meeting, Chinese Academy of Sciences Vice President He Huping and Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography Director General Zhang Yuanming noted that the creation of the new mechanism practically implements agreements reached by the nations' leaders during the second Central Asia–China summit, which took place in June 2025 in Astana.
The primary objective of the new platform is to develop scientific interaction between Central Asian countries and China.
The parties intend to expand the exchange of research results and satellite remote sensing data, as well as to jointly implement projects to combat land degradation, desertification, soil salinization, and other environmental challenges. Special attention will be paid to identifying new areas of cooperation that contribute to the sustainable development of the region.
During the meeting, the Chinese side highly praised the environmental reforms implemented in Uzbekistan, noting the consistent state policy to introduce principles of "green" development, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve environmental legislation.
The "Emerald Waters and Green Mountains Are Invaluable Treasures" initiative by Chinese President Xi Jinping was highlighted, with meeting participants noting that its ideas find practical implementation in the environmental policy of Uzbekistan.
One of the key results of the cooperation was the opening of the Central Asian Center for Ecology and Environmental Research in Tashkent, established at Green University with the support of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography. The new center will serve as a regional scientific platform for conducting joint research, training specialists, and developing modern solutions in the fields of ecology and climate change.
The establishment of the center confirms the growing role of Uzbekistan in shaping the regional environmental agenda and developing international scientific cooperation.
Experts note that combining the research potential of Central Asian countries and China will increase the efficiency of monitoring climate processes, implementing modern technologies, and developing scientifically grounded solutions to ensure the environmental sustainability of the region.
