Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Rustam Juraev has been appointed chairman of Uzbekistan's Presidential Security Service, a government source told Gazeta. The appointment was later confirmed by presidential press secretary Sherzod Asadov.
Along with the appointment, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev promoted Juraev from the rank of major general to lieutenant general.
Before assuming his new position, Juraev had served since January 2026 as First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs' Public Security Department.
He succeeds Alisher Usmanov, who had led the Presidential Security Service since December 2020. Earlier reports by several media outlets said Usmanov had been relieved of his duties.
The Presidential Security Service is a specialized state body responsible for protecting the President of Uzbekistan, members of the president's family, former presidents and their family members, foreign leaders during official visits, and other protected persons. The agency is also responsible for securing related facilities, travel routes, places of stay and transport. It reports directly to the president.
Juraev was born in 1968 and graduated from the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1994.
From 1994 to 2008, he held various positions within the Ministry of Internal Affairs before serving in the presidential administration until 2012. Between 2012 and 2015, he was deputy chief of the Tashkent Main Department of Internal Affairs. In 2015, he was appointed head of the Namangan Regional Department of Internal Affairs and later led the Khorezm Regional Department of Internal Affairs until 2017.
From 2017 to 2018, Juraev served as Minister of Emergency Situations. Between February 2018 and March 2020, he was Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and chief of the Tashkent Main Department of Internal Affairs. He was then appointed commander of the National Guard, a position he held until January 2026, when he became First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs.
