Kokand Halva Granted Geographical Indication Status
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan has registered Kokand halva as a geographical indication and entered it into the special state register, the press service of the Intellectual Property Agency announced.
The agency noted that Kokand has been one of the centers of craftsmanship and national confectionery art since ancient times. It is here that the tradition of preparing Kokand halva was established, gaining recognition due to its specific production technology, taste qualities, and other characteristics.
As emphasized, the registration of the geographical indication will provide legal protection for the name of the product and its traditional manufacturing technology. It will also contribute to preserving its unique features and strengthening quality guarantees.
According to the Intellectual Property Agency, the registration is also aimed at preserving the gastronomic heritage of the Ferghana region, developing the regional national brand, and promoting it at the international level.
A geographical indication is an object of intellectual property which confirms that the special properties of a product are linked to a specific territory, its natural conditions, historical traditions, and human factors.
