Uzbekistan plans 1.4 GW coal-fired power plant in Angren

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A 1.4 GW coal-fired thermal power plant is planned for construction in Angren, Uzbekistan, based on the Nisbosh coal deposit, which has estimated reserves of 233 million tons.

The project was presented following a review by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of proposals on the development of the coal industry and related investment projects on May 26.

The planned power plant will consist of four generating units, each with a capacity of 350 MW, and will use ultra-supercritical technologies. Total investment in the project is estimated at US$1.3 billion.

According to the data presented, the new plant is expected to generate 9.8 billion kWh of electricity annually. Its implementation is projected to save up to 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.

As part of the development of the Nisbosh deposit, coal mining operations are also planned. Investment in this segment is estimated at US$494 million, with production expected to reach up to 10 million tons of coal per year and the creation of 880 new jobs.

Construction of the power plant is expected to provide employment for up to 1,500 people during the implementation phase. Once operational, the facility will employ 310 specialists.

It is also noted that from June 1, state regulation of coal prices is expected to be lifted as part of broader industry reforms.

The presentation also reviewed measures to increase the share of locally produced goods in mining projects and to develop industrial cooperation.

Officials emphasized the need to prepare a localization strategy for the mining sector for 2027–2030 and to support domestic manufacturers through long-term contracts.
