Tashkent Adjusts Traffic Light Signal at Key Intersection

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Traffic Management Center (TSODD) has modified traffic light operation at the intersection of Fitrat and Heydar Aliyev streets in Tashkent following an analysis of traffic flow, nearly doubling the green light duration for the most congested direction.

Under the new signal timing, oncoming traffic stops slightly earlier, giving turning vehicles more time to complete maneuvers and clear the intersection. Previously, the first phase of the traffic light cycle lasted 35 seconds, and the second phase lasted 28 seconds.

According to TSODD, daytime traffic queues at the intersection have shortened and traffic flow has become more uniform, with crossing times now taking up to two minutes.

Road conditions in the area are also affected by a nearby railway crossing. When trains pass, vehicle movement is temporarily halted, which can lead to traffic queues.

TSODD plans to develop separate traffic light signal modes for morning and evening peak hours. Moving forward, the agency intends to reconfigure adjacent intersections and integrate them into a unified "Green Wave" system, enabling vehicles traveling at permissible speeds to pass successive intersections on green signals with fewer stops.

Tashkent previously launched two "green corridors." In late July, such a regime was introduced on Buyuk Ipak Yuli Street along the section from the Tura Buva Mosque to Salom Street, prioritizing traffic toward the city center in the morning and in the reverse direction in the evening.

Another green corridor was established on a 1.7-kilometer section of the Small Ring Road, stretching from Bogibuston Street to the Chilanzar metro station, where TSODD synchronized traffic lights across five intersections.

When maintaining speeds of 40–60 km/h, drivers can cover that section without stopping in approximately 2 minutes and 45 seconds—down 45% from the roughly five minutes required prior to the signal reconfiguration.
