Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Since the beginning of 2026, correctional facilities in Uzbekistan have arranged more than 64,000 long-term visits and over 30,000 short-term visits between prisoners and their relatives, as well as more than 215,000 telephone calls.

These figures were presented on 6 November at an expanded meeting of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis Committee on International Affairs, Defence and Security.

The committee reviewed the findings of an oversight and analytical study into prisoners’ rights to meet relatives, receive parcels and other deliveries, hold video visits and communicate by telephone. The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan reported this.

The study covered correctional facilities in Navoiy and Bukhara regions.

Inspectors assessed the conditions for family visits, the receipt of parcels and other deliveries, video calls and telephone conversations, as well as compliance with legal requirements.

The review also examined the condition of visiting rooms, compliance with sanitary and safety standards, the storage of personal belongings and the handling of complaints and appeals.

The meeting was attended by lawmakers, senior officials and responsible staff from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, sector specialists and media representatives.

Participants noted that conditions in correctional facilities have been steadily improving in recent years, with upgrades to material and technical facilities and the development of modern infrastructure. Over the past two years, visiting rooms at nine facilities have been renovated and equipped with modern equipment.

MPs questioned officials about arrangements for family visits, the capacity of existing infrastructure and the use of digital technologies.

In particular, they asked whether visiting rooms could meet current demand, how the registration of visitors and access to visits could be accelerated, and whether waiting lists could be moved to an electronic format.

Lawmakers also raised measures to reduce waiting times, improve service quality and introduce digital solutions, as well as plans for further improvements.

The organisation of video visits received particular attention, especially for relatives living far from correctional facilities.

Participants also discussed simplifying the receipt of parcels and other deliveries, expanding alternative ways for prisoners to obtain essential goods and ensuring uninterrupted telephone services.

Following the discussion, tasks were identified to improve the organisation of visits, make more effective use of infrastructure, introduce digital technologies, expand remote communication and make services more convenient for citizens.

The committee adopted a resolution on the matter and said it would continue its work in this area as part of parliamentary oversight.
