Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan has harvested 5 million tonnes of cotton for the first time since 1991.

The result is a record for the country's cotton industry over this period and strengthens the raw material base of the textile sector.

The increased cotton harvest creates additional opportunities for local enterprises to expand production of yarn, fabrics and finished textile products. It also increases the industry's capacity to process domestically grown raw materials.

Cotton harvesting is still underway in some regions of the country.

In particular, farmers are collecting seed cotton, which will be used to prepare for next year's planting season. To obtain high-quality planting material, cotton plants must be allowed to reach full maturity naturally.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan is developing and testing new cotton varieties designed for cultivation in desert conditions, high temperatures and saline and sandy soils. Such research is being conducted, among other locations, in Alat District of Bukhara Region.

The aim is to expand the geographical reach of cotton cultivation and ensure stable yields under challenging natural and climatic conditions.
