Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan’s Agency for the Development of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry and Swiss company F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd (Roche) have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore opportunities for localising pharmaceutical production in the country.
The agreement provides for the establishment of a joint working group, according to the agency.
The memorandum aims to develop Uzbekistan’s pharmaceutical infrastructure, assess the potential for local production of innovative medicines and introduce international expertise. Before practical decisions are made, the parties will conduct a comprehensive assessment of technical, regulatory and economic factors.
The working group will include representatives of the agency’s management and Roche. It will coordinate the research areas and prepare a joint report on the feasibility of localising production.
The parties will examine the potential for local production of medicines used to treat cancer, haematological, ophthalmological and rare diseases.
They will also assess whether local manufacturing facilities comply with international Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements and evaluate their technological capabilities.
The phased assessment will also cover opportunities for secondary packaging of medicines, batch quality control, primary packaging of selected medicines and technology transfer.
According to the agency, the initiative is expected to strengthen the technological capabilities of Uzbekistan’s pharmaceutical industry, identify prospects for localising innovative medicines and support the adoption of international quality standards.
