Uruguay and Cape Verde Draw 2-2 at 2026 World Cup

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The national teams of Uruguay and Cape Verde played to a draw in their second-round match of the 2026 World Cup group stage. The match, held at a stadium in Miami, Florida, United States, ended with a score of 2-2. This result has intensified the tournament struggle in Group H to the maximum ahead of the final games.

The African team opened the scoring when midfielder Kevin Lenini, who plays for the Russian football club Krasnodar, scored in the 21st minute; he was later substituted in the 70th minute. Forward Gilson Benchimol of Togliatti-based Akron also participated for Cape Verde, playing 58 minutes.

The Uruguayan team managed to turn the tide of the game at the end of the first half by scoring two consecutive goals. Maximiliano Araujo scored in the 44th minute, and Agustin Canobbio delivered a precise strike in the sixth minute of stoppage time. However, the South Americans failed to maintain their lead, as Helio Varela restored parity in the 61st minute.

For the Cape Verde national team, this match was only the second World Cup appearance in the history of the national federation. In the opening round of the current tournament, the debutants managed to sensationally take points from the group favorite by playing to a 0-0 draw against Spain.

After two rounds, Spain maintains leadership in Group H with 4 points. Cape Verde and Uruguay follow, each with 2 points in their tally. The Group H standings are rounded out by Saudi Arabia with 1 point. In the decisive round of the group stage, Uruguay will compete against Spain, while Cape Verde will play against Saudi Arabia. Both matches will take place on the night of 27 June 2026.

As a reminder, 48 national teams are competing for the first time at the current World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament regulations allow the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, to advance to the round of 32.
