Tashkent National Academic Drama Theater to Undergo Major Renovation
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A large-scale capital renovation of the Uzbek National Academic Drama Theater building is planned in the capital of Uzbekistan. The official decision to start the restoration work was signed by the Hokim of Tashkent, Shavkat Umurzakov, on 25 June 2026.
Funds amounting to 1.87 billion soums will be allocated from the target resources of the Tashkent City Development Fund to finance the comprehensive reconstruction of the architectural site, as well as the accompanying improvement of the entire surrounding urban area.
The functions of the general contractor for this infrastructure project have been assigned to the state engineering company Unified Customer Service, operating under the capital hokimiyat. The need to update the cultural facility has been developing for some time.
In April 2026, the Head of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Saida Mirziyoyeva, personally visited several theaters in the capital that were in urgent need of repair work, after which she officially announced that she was taking the issues of their modernization and reconstruction under her personal strict control.
The Uzbek National Academic Drama Theater is the oldest professional theater in the republic and traces its official history back to 1914, when the famous educator Abdulla Avloniy formed the prominent Turon theater troupe.
In 1929, the cultural institution was named after Hamza, and in 1933, the collective received the high status of an academic theater. The institution acquired its current name, the Uzbek National Academic Drama Theater, in accordance with a decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated 21 September 2001.
