Tashkent Launches 1.2 km BRT Lane Section

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A 1.2 km section of dedicated Bus Rapid Transit infrastructure has opened on Shakhrisabz Street in Tashkent to improve bus speeds and service stability, the Tashkent Traffic Management Center reported.

The newly opened segment runs from the roundabout at the intersection of Shakhrisabz, Mirabad and Shota Rustaveli streets to the intersection with Amir Temur Avenue. It marks the first phase of a broader project that will create a dedicated bus corridor spanning approximately 3 km along Shakhrisabz Street.

To accommodate high-capacity buses and heavy traffic loads, workers completely reconstructed the road structure. The project involved rebuilding both the asphalt surface and the underlying foundation, with soil excavated to depths exceeding two meters in certain areas. Builders removed the old subbase and installed geotextiles to protect against groundwater and soil movement, preventing future subsidence.

The road base was reinforced in stages, starting with a 35 cm layer of sand and gravel mixture, followed by an M-75 grade stabilizing layer. Crews then laid a 9 cm layer of coarse-grained asphalt concrete and a 5 cm top layer of SMA-20 stone mastic asphalt concrete.

The project also installed five new bus stops along Shakhrisabz Street. The dedicated lane is physically separated from general traffic by curbs, which traffic officials say will reduce bus delays caused by congestion and ensure more consistent departure intervals. The physical barrier is also intended to improve safety as buses approach and leave stops.

Traffic remained open during construction. Work was conducted in stages along the central lanes while general traffic continued using the outer right lanes in both directions. The opening forms part of a broader effort to expand public transport priority infrastructure across Tashkent's street network.
