Switzerland reaches World Cup quarterfinals for first time in 72 years

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Switzerland national football team has reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time in 72 years. In the round of 16 match of the world championship, Swiss footballers defeated the Colombia team in a penalty shootout following a 0:0 draw in regulation and extra time.

The Swiss team will play in the World Cup quarterfinals for the fourth time in its history. The team previously reached this stage at the 1934, 1938 and 1954 tournaments, but has never been able to overcome this barrier.

At the three previous World Cups, the Switzerland national team ended its performance at the round of 16 stage.

The 2026 World Cup is taking place in the USA, Canada and Mexico. For the first time, 48 national teams are participating in the final stage of the tournament. The tournament will conclude on 19 July 2026.

The next opponent for the Switzerland national team will be the reigning world champion, Argentina.
