Road Deaths in Uzbekistan Reach One-Third of Crashes
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan recorded 1,102 road traffic accidents in January–March 2026, with nearly one-third—31.4%—resulting in fatalities, according to a press briefing held on April 11 by Ramazon Ashrapov, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and Head of the Investigation Department.
Ashrapov reported that 346 people were killed in road accidents during the reporting period. Data on the number of injured was not disclosed. A request for clarification sent to the Road Safety Service press office remained unanswered.
Compared to the same period in 2025, the total number of road accidents declined. In the first quarter of 2025, 1,293 crashes were recorded, indicating a reduction of 191 cases, or approximately 15%.
Despite the decrease in overall incidents, officials emphasized that road safety remains one of the most pressing public safety concerns in the country.
Excessive speeding was identified as the leading cause of accidents, accounting for 32.9% of all cases. Traffic signal violations were responsible for 22.4% of crashes, while failure to yield to pedestrians accounted for 13.6%.
An additional 4.2% of accidents occurred due to drivers falling asleep at the wheel, underscoring ongoing risks related to fatigue and long-distance driving.
