Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Ltd. (MHPS) will construct second combined cycle cogeneration plant at the Navoi thermal power station in Uzbekistan.

According to the press release of Mitsubishi Corporation, Uzbekenergo awarded the contract on realization of the projects to the Japanese companies. The sum of contract was not disclosed.

Within the project, MHPS will supply the main components, while Mitsubishi Corporation together with Calik Enerji Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S. (Turkey) will supply the remaining components needed for plant construction and conduct inland transportation as well as civil engineering and installation works.

This project is aimed at building a high-efficiency combined plant with the capacity to supply 450 MW of power and 200 Gcal/h of heating to homes and establishments locally.

The project will be financed by Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA), and Uzbekistan governmental fund. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2019.

Earlier, it was reported that the project cost is US$520 million. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) allocated US$360 million to the project, Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan – US$100 million. Uzbekenergo will also issue own resources to finance the project.

The consortium of Turkish Calik Enerji Sanayi ve Ticaret AS and Spanish Initec completed construction of the first combined-cycle plant with the capacity of 450 megawatt at the Navoi thermal power station in October 2012. The project cost was US$530 million.

Japan’s Mitsubishi supplied combined-cycle plant with the capacity of 478 megawatt to Navoi thermal power station. The project will allow to produce 2.8 billion KWH of electricity a year and cut consumption of fuel by 1.8 times. It will save 400 million tonnes of gas or over US$110 million.

Total capacities of the Navoi thermal power station with new combined-cycle plant reached 1,546 megawatt, which allows to produce 7.9 billion KWH electricity a year.
