Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has reviewed the restoration work at the Kosh Madrasahs architectural complex in Bukhara and examined plans for its further rehabilitation.

The complex consists of two madrasahs facing each other. The Abdullakhan Madrasah was built in 1588–1590 at the initiative of Abdullakhan II, ruler of the Bukhara Khanate and a member of the Shaybanid dynasty.

The building is distinguished by its complex layout and engineering features. Its main entrance, facing south, is decorated with geometric mosaics made of blue ceramic tiles and glazed ornamental elements.

In the 16th century, the madrasah was regarded as one of the major centres of higher education and scholarship in Transoxiana. Subjects taught there included religious studies, Arabic language and literature, logic, philosophy, mathematics, geometry and medicine.

The second building in the complex, the Modarikhan Madrasah, was constructed in 1566–1567 on the orders of Abdullakhan II in honour of his mother.

Partial restoration of the Kosh Madrasahs was carried out in 2023–2024 as part of a project worth 6 billion soums. According to figures presented to the president, the complex receives around 1 million visitors annually.

During the visit, Mirziyoyev was presented with a plan for further restoration of the architectural ensemble. He instructed officials to take measures to make the site more comfortable for tourists.
