Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A programme comprising 145 investment projects with a total value of US$7.8 billion has been developed for Uzbekistan’s Bukhara region. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended a ceremony during his visit to the region to commission new facilities and launch construction of planned industrial enterprises.
According to figures presented at the event, the region has attracted US$9.5 billion in foreign investment over the past nine years. During this period, more than 6,000 new production facilities have been established and 120,000 permanent jobs created.
Of the 145 projects, 55 worth US$654 million are being commissioned, while construction is beginning on another 90 projects valued at US$7.1 billion. They cover petrochemicals, textiles, mechanical engineering, energy, mining, pharmaceuticals, digital technologies, logistics, agriculture, food processing, housing and tourism.
Investors from the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, China, Vietnam, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Russia and India are participating in the projects. The Asian Development Bank, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and local entrepreneurs are also involved.
The programme is expected to create more than 14,000 jobs, generate annual production worth 22 trillion soums and support exports of US$510 million.
Energy development is a particular priority. In recent years, US$2 billion has been invested in the region’s renewable energy sector. Wind power plants with a combined capacity of 1,000 MW and solar power plants with a capacity of 750 MW have been commissioned. Energy storage systems with a capacity of 63 MW have also been installed, and 601 km of high-voltage transmission lines have been built.
Construction of the 300 MW Bosh-2 wind power plant is continuing in Gijduvan district with the participation of ACWA. Toyota Corporation and Sinoma are building wind power plants with a combined capacity of 1,000 MW in Jondor and Peshku districts.
A US$165 million project to generate electricity from household waste is also planned for Kagan district. In cooperation with German company Leman, a US$150 million project is scheduled to begin to ensure the reliable operation of pumping stations along the Amu-Bukhara canal.
In the textile industry, a production complex under the Kurt Baver brand is planned in the city of Bukhara, with an annual capacity of 62,000 tonnes. A US$400 million cotton and textile cluster is being developed in Romitan district with the participation of Chinese investors.
As part of these initiatives, investors have also proposed developing 9,000 hectares of land. This is expected to increase the share of higher value-added products to 65% and create additional export opportunities worth US$100 million.
Tourism is another priority. Plans for Bukhara include the development of the Boqiy Bukhoro cultural and ethnographic park, an exhibition hall, hotels and cultural and entertainment facilities. Hotels operating under the international brands Indigo, Holiday Inn and Hilton are also planned for the city.
Mirziyoyev said that 19 major projects worth a total of US$3 billion are planned to begin in Bukhara. If the work is organised systematically, the city’s tourism services exports could reach US$5 billion.
In infrastructure, the authorities have been tasked with ensuring access to drinking water across the region within the next five years and providing sewerage networks to major cities and district centres. Two projects worth a combined US$633 million have already been launched in cooperation with international partners. They are expected to improve water supply for 2 million residents, while 781,000 people will gain access to drinking water for the first time.
The programme also includes seven road projects worth US$565 million, aimed at tripling the region’s transit potential.
During the event, the president symbolically launched newly completed facilities and inaugurated construction of planned projects. The ceremony was followed by a meeting with foreign investors.
