Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Tashkent has planted 16.6 million shrub cuttings under the nationwide Yashil Makon (Green Space) initiative, as the Uzbek capital works towards growing at least 120 million shrubs across its 12 districts.

The programme, initiated by the Tashkent city administration, aims to establish local production of planting materials, reduce dependence on imports and lower the cost of purchasing ready-grown seedlings.

Under the initiative, each of the capital's 12 districts is expected to grow at least 10 million shrubs, contributing to the overall target of 120 million.

Planting activities initially began in Bektemir district before being expanded to all districts of Tashkent.

According to the city administration, more than 2,500 employees and approximately 100 units of specialised equipment have been mobilised to implement the project.

A total of 31.4 hectares of land has been prepared for shrub cultivation.

Of this area, 3.8 hectares have been equipped with greenhouse arches and protective plastic coverings to support the growing process.

An additional 3.7 million shrub cuttings have been prepared for the next stage of planting.

The initiative is intended to provide Tashkent with a domestic supply of planting materials while supporting the expansion of green spaces and strengthening the city's environmental resilience.

By developing its own shrub cultivation capacity, the city administration expects to reduce expenditure on imported planting materials and establish a more consistent supply of seedlings for future landscaping activities.

The administration also expects local seedling production to support the systematic greening of Tashkent and contribute to improvements in the urban microclimate.
