Middle Corridor Becomes Backbone of Tashkent-Baku Economic Convergence
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Transport and logistics cooperation is transforming into a primary structural driver for deepening trade and economic relations between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. A comprehensive suite of initiatives being rolled out within the framework of the Middle Corridor spans maritime logistics, rail transport, port infrastructure, and multimodal delivery chains, according to the Deputy Minister of Investments, Industry, and Trade of Uzbekistan, Khurram Teshabaev, in an interview with Report.az.
In his assessment, the Baku International Sea Trade Port already plays a pivotal role in securing access for Uzbek products to external markets. "In recent years, cargo transportation volumes along this route have grown steadily, and the range of exported products is expanding," the deputy minister noted.
The combined logistics initiatives encompass several interconnected projects:
First, the establishment of a joint logistics center at the Baku Port featuring cargo consolidation, multimodal transshipment, and expedited customs clearance capabilities.
Second, the creation of a joint venture between JSC Uztemiryulkargo and CJSC Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company, alongside the formation of a joint Caspian sea fleet.
Third, the introduction of comprehensive tariff solutions and the provision of transshipment discounts specifically tailored for Uzbek exporters.
The strategic relevance of these projects is significantly amplified by the implementation of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway route.
According to Teshabaev's projections, this rail corridor will "substantially increase freight traffic volumes from China and Central Asia toward the Caspian region," transforming the Baku Port into a critically important transit hub on the path to Europe.
"We view these projects not only as a bilateral initiative but also as an important element of the emerging Eurasian transport architecture aimed at strengthening connectivity between Asia and Europe," the deputy minister concluded.
