Kashkadarya and Navoi to Expand Wastewater System Access

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan has signed construction contracts to implement projects aimed at expanding sewerage infrastructure in Shahrisabz and the Kitab district center in Kashkadarya region, as well as the Karmana district in Navoi region, according to JSC Uzsuvtaminot. The projects involve the construction of wastewater treatment plants, sewerage networks, and pumping stations, expanding wastewater collection access to nearly 290,000 residents.

The total cost of the infrastructure initiative is 119 million euros. A loan agreement between Uzbekistan and the French Development Agency (AFD) was signed on 25 March 2022. Additionally, the European Commission provided a grant of 8.15 million euros for the projects through the French Development Agency.

The signing ceremony took place within the framework of cooperation with the AFD and the European Union. Attendees included representatives of the Embassy of France in Uzbekistan, the EU Delegation, the AFD, construction companies, technical supervision entities, and leadership from JSC Uzsuvtaminot.

Contracts were signed for construction tasks alongside technical supervision and consulting support. Under the Shahrisabz construction package, detailed design development and building work will be carried out by a consortium comprising Turkish firm Alkatas Insaat ve Taahut A.S. and MESMER-EAST LLC. Alkatas Insaat ve Taahut A.S. was selected as the contractor for the Navoi construction package. Technical supervision will be assigned to South Korea's DOHWA Engineering Co., Ltd. and France's SAFEGE S.A.S.

In the Kashkadarya region, the project will cover Shahrisabz and the administrative center of the Kitab district. Plans include constructing two treatment facilities with a combined daily capacity of 53,000 cubic meters, 521.2 kilometers of sewerage networks, and 10 pumping stations. Upon completion, wastewater services will reach 240,400 residents across 51 neighborhood units. In the Kitab district center, where no centralized wastewater infrastructure currently exists, coverage will reach 81 percent, serving 63,400 residents for the first time. In Shahrisabz, coverage will expand from the current 8 percent (19,600 residents) to 86 percent, serving 177,000 residents.

In the Karmana district of Navoi region, the project provides for the construction of a treatment plant with a daily capacity of 9,800 cubic meters, 161 kilometers of networks, and five pumping stations. This will allow 49,400 of the 54,900 residents in 14 neighborhoods to gain access to centralized wastewater services for the first time, bringing coverage to 90 percent.
