Eco Party Proposes ‘Green’ Bus Stops for Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Eco Party of Uzbekistan has proposed launching a pilot "Green Stop" project in Tashkent aimed at creating more comfortable and environmentally friendly bus stops.
The party said the introduction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes has been an important step toward improving public transport efficiency, reducing traffic congestion and increasing bus speeds. At the same time, it said transport infrastructure development should be accompanied by better conditions for passengers waiting for public transport.
According to the party, many newly built bus stops do not provide adequate protection from the sun during periods of high summer temperatures. It said this creates inconvenience for passengers, particularly elderly people, children, pregnant women and people with health conditions.
Under the proposed pilot project, between 10 and 20 bus stops would be equipped with wide canopies featuring heat-reflective roofing, solar panels, energy-efficient LED lighting and open structures designed to improve natural ventilation. Drought-resistant plants would also be introduced.
The proposal also calls for bicycle parking facilities and rainwater harvesting systems at selected bus stops.
The Eco Party said the proposed solutions should take Tashkent's climatic conditions into account.
According to the initiative's authors, "green" bus stops would improve passenger comfort, reduce dust levels in the city, expand green spaces, lower energy consumption and enhance the environmental appearance of the capital.
The party also called on the relevant authorities to assess the comfort, shading and climate suitability of both new and existing bus stops, take residents' views into account and introduce modern environmentally friendly solutions.
