Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan's Ferghana Region Emergency Situations Department has warned residents against using old Vaillant double-circuit gas boilers that were allegedly illegally imported into the country after being decommissioned in Germany and subsequently modified using makeshift methods.
According to the department, some entrepreneurs imported the equipment disguised as spare parts. The boilers, which were no longer suitable for use, were then modified to look like new products and sold to consumers.
One of the main safety risks identified by the agency is the absence of original flues.
During the modification process, polyethylene sewer pipes were installed instead. These pipes are not designed to withstand high temperatures. When heated, they can lose their rigidity and become disconnected, creating a potentially life-threatening hazard.
Another risk is the unauthorised covering of air intake pipes with fabric or other objects. This restricts the oxygen supply, can cause incomplete combustion of natural gas and may result in increased carbon monoxide emissions.
The department linked violations involving the installation of such boilers to the deaths of 18 people from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Seven members of one family died on 25 October in the village of Chimyon in Ferghana district. Another six people died in Tashkent on the same day. On 1 November, five people lost their lives in Kokand.
The department urged residents not to install old Vaillant double-circuit boilers. Those who already have such equipment were advised to contact specialists immediately to have its safety inspected.
The agency also stressed that the installation of all heating appliances should be entrusted to qualified professionals.
Before installing heating equipment, consumers should check its quality certificates and operating instructions, ensure that it meets safety requirements and verify that it is suitable for use.
