Uzbekistan proposes summer "siesta" for tourism sector

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Tourism Committee of Uzbekistan has put forward a draft resolution for public discussion that envisions altering the operating hours of the tourism sector during the summer season.

The document proposes implementing a "siesta" system as a pilot project from 1 June to 31 August in the major tourist destinations of Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva.

It is anticipated that the new regulations will apply to hotels, hostels, guest houses, museums, historical sites, restaurants, cafes, tour operators, and other tourist hubs.

According to the project, the operation of tourist infrastructure will be split into three distinct shifts: an morning shift from 07:00 to 13:00, a "siesta" break from 13:00 to 17:00, and an evening-night shift from 17:00 to 23:00. Active operations would be restricted during the hottest hours of the day to ensure a break.

Crucially, tourist facilities will be required to maintain comfortable conditions for visitors during the afternoon break. Air conditioning systems will remain operational, necessary staff will stay on duty, and guest services will continue.

The draft also features the launch of the "Night Museum" and "Evening Excursion" programs, the design of special summer menus in cafes and restaurants, and an expansion of cultural, gastronomic, and entertainment events scheduled for the cooler evening hours.

According to the developers, these measures will help adapt the tourism industry to extreme summer heatwaves, improve visitor comfort, and utilize the evening hours more effectively for hosting excursions and public events.
