Uzbekistan Launches National Reading Movement

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has taken part in a ceremony at the International Congress Center in Tashkent to launch a nationwide movement aimed at developing a culture of reading in the country.

In his speech, the head of state emphasized that in the context of rapid global changes, the growing development of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and modern gadgets, the ability of individuals to think independently and deeply has become especially valuable.

According to the President, reading forms broad thinking, critical reasoning, and the intellectual potential of society.

During the ceremony, it was noted that in the New Uzbekistan, the development of reading culture and support for books have been elevated to the level of state policy. Love for books was highlighted not only as part of the education system, but also as an important factor in the spiritual development of the nation, strengthening the intellectual capacity of youth, and improving the country’s competitiveness.

The President recalled the rich scientific and spiritual heritage of the Uzbek people, highlighting the contributions of great thinkers and scholars such as Imam al-Bukhari, Muhammad al-Khwarizmi, Ahmad al-Fergani, Alisher Navoi, and Mirzo Ulugbek to world civilization.

It was emphasized that the pursuit of knowledge and love of reading formed the foundation of their outstanding achievements.

The President noted that from the early years of his activity, he has paid special attention to fostering interest in books and knowledge among young people. As an example, ongoing projects in the country such as “Young Book Lover” and “Young Reading Family” were cited, which promote reading among youth and strengthen family reading culture.

It was reported that in the current year, 42 top school students from all regions of the country participated in the national stage of the “Young Book Lover” competition. Three winners were awarded presidential prizes in the form of modern cars.

Special attention was also given to international experience in promoting reading. In particular, the “Arab Reading Challenge,” initiated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in the United Arab Emirates, was noted, which has reached more than 200 million readers worldwide in a short time.

Based on this experience and national spiritual heritage, Uzbekistan is launching the “National Reading Movement.”

According to the President, a separate decree was signed the day before to provide comprehensive state support for the program. The final stage of the movement will now be held annually at the presidential level.

The total annual prize fund of the project will amount to 240,000 US dollars, and the main prize winner will receive 50,000 US dollars. Organizers said this will become the largest award in Uzbekistan’s history in the field of reading culture support.

It is planned that the movement will cover all regions of the country, and students from grades 1 to 11 will be eligible to participate.

The President stressed that the initiative is considered a strategic investment in the country’s future and an important element in shaping an intellectually strong and creative generation.

Experts note that the launch of the National Reading Movement reflects the state’s efforts to strengthen humanitarian and educational policy amid digital transformation. The development of reading culture is seen as an important tool for improving education quality, fostering critical thinking, and strengthening the spiritual potential of youth.

At the end of the ceremony, the head of state called on schoolchildren, teachers, parents, and the wider public to actively participate in the new nationwide movement, emphasizing that a nation striving for knowledge and high ideals is capable of ensuring a sustainable and successful future.
