Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan and Japan discussed the further implementation of high-level agreements and new areas of economic cooperation, Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev said on his LinkedIn page.
The meeting was held at the Cabinet of Ministers with Japan’s State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Kenji Yamada.
According to Khodjaev, Japan remains an important partner for Uzbekistan in technology development and investment attraction. Following a high-level visit in December last year, a portfolio of 75 joint projects worth a total of US$12 billion was formed.
Khodjaev said the main task at the current stage is to consistently implement the agreements reached by creating new production facilities and infrastructure projects and introducing advanced technologies.
The sides identified energy and renewable energy, transport and urban infrastructure, healthcare, geological exploration and critical minerals as key areas of cooperation.
Major projects in these areas are already being implemented with the participation of Japanese companies including Sojitz, Sumitomo Corporation, Itochu and JOGMEC, as well as other partners.
The meeting also focused on opportunities for industrial cooperation. In particular, the sides discussed developing a joint Cooperation Programme for 2027–2030, expanding Japanese business participation in renewable energy and energy-efficiency projects, and deepening cooperation in critical minerals.
A special economic zone being established jointly with JICA and primarily targeting Japanese companies was also identified as a promising area.
According to Khodjaev, the zone is planned to serve as a practical platform for attracting new production projects, technologies and expertise.
