Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Tashkent has launched a new section of the “green wave” traffic-light system on Shota Rustaveli Street between Southern Station and the Grand Mir Hotel. The system operates in both directions and, according to test results provided by the source, reduced travel time on the section by almost 30%.

For traffic traveling from Southern Station toward the Grand Mir Hotel, travel time fell from 11 minutes 30 seconds to eight minutes. The number of stops at red traffic lights decreased from six to two.

In the opposite direction, from the Grand Mir Hotel to Southern Station, travel time dropped from 12 minutes to eight minutes 30 seconds. The number of stops at red lights also fell from six to two.

Overall, travel time in both directions decreased by three minutes 30 seconds. This represents a reduction of about 30% compared with the results recorded before the system was introduced.

The “green wave” system coordinates traffic lights based on the time required for vehicles to travel along a particular section of road. An individual green-light interval is calculated for each subsequent traffic light.

When drivers maintain the prescribed speed and move at a steady pace, a vehicle that starts moving on a green light can reach the next traffic light as it turns green. The effectiveness of the system depends on traffic conditions and the ability to maintain a free flow of vehicles.

Drivers are advised to start moving on a green light, observe the prescribed speed limit, avoid sudden acceleration and braking, maintain a safe distance and follow traffic-light signals while giving way to pedestrians.

The system is being introduced to ensure smoother and safer traffic flow. It is also intended to reduce the number of stops at traffic lights, queues at intersections and waiting times, while helping lower fuel consumption and harmful emissions.
