Samarkand receives World Craft City status
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The city of Samarkand has received World Craft City status. A certificate confirming the designation was presented to Samarkand Region Governor Adiz Boboev following a meeting with Saad Hani Al-Qaddumi, president of the World Crafts Council, the Samarkand regional administration said.
The meeting focused on the further development of crafts, preservation of national applied arts traditions and their promotion outside Uzbekistan.
Particular attention was paid to creating favorable conditions for artisans and developing the “ustoz-shogird” tradition, which involves the transfer of professional skills and experience from a master to an apprentice.
The designation of Samarkand as a World Craft City is aimed at supporting the region’s centuries-old craft traditions and expanding opportunities for local artisans. It is also expected to promote examples of national applied arts internationally.
The parties agreed to continue cooperation in crafts and tourism.
The new status is also expected to contribute to the development of international ties in these areas, the Samarkand regional administration said.
