Tashkent to Preserve Rare Soviet-Era Mosaic Compositions

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Work has begun in Tashkent’s Yunusabad district to carefully dismantle and relocate rare mosaic compositions on the exterior walls of a former tuberculosis dispensary.

The mosaics are located at 6, 3rd Passage of Niyozbek yuli Street and are being considered by the Cultural Heritage Agency as candidates for inclusion in the National List of Immovable Tangible Cultural Heritage Sites.

The former tuberculosis dispensary was built in 1972. Due to planned demolition work at the site, a decision was made to relocate the mosaic compositions to another location to preserve their integrity and historical and artistic value.

According to the Cultural Heritage Agency, the mosaics are rare examples of monumental art from the second half of the 20th century. Their artistic value is associated with their compositional features, use of color and subject matter.

The mosaics artistically depict themes including people, nature, labor, creation, science and peace. Colored smalti and other mosaic elements were used to create the images.

The relocation of the compositions is intended to preserve them as examples of the monumental art of their era and ensure that they can be passed on to future generations.
