Cultural Heritage Agency Denies Reports on Chodra Khovli Complex Condition

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan’s Cultural Heritage Agency has commented on reports circulating on social media about the condition of the Chodra Khovli complex in Khorezm region’s Khiva district, saying the site is under state protection and underwent major restoration work in 2022–2023. The agency said the restoration was carried out by the Khiva Regional Restoration Centre on its order and funded by the state budget.

The restoration focused on preserving the monument’s historical and architectural appearance and maintaining traditional construction techniques.

The work included strengthening and repairing the ayvans and staircases, covering the exterior walls with traditional adobe plaster and finishing the interiors with ganch. The agency said modern construction solutions were used only where necessary to preserve the complex’s historical appearance as much as possible.

The surrounding area was also improved, with pedestrian paths built and a night lighting system installed for visitors.

The agency said efforts to preserve and promote the complex will continue. Plans include developing tourism infrastructure around the monument and attracting local and foreign tourists.

The agency recalled that Chodra Khovli was built in 1871 as a summer residence of the Khiva khans. The complex’s name comes from the shortened form of the Persian word “chordara”, where “chor” means “four” and “dara” means “steep ravine” or “gorge”.
