President Mirziyoyev reviews development of Uzgarish mahalla in Sergeli
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) —The President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, reviewed the results of infrastructure modernization and landscaping efforts in the Uzgarish mahalla of Tashkent's Sergeli district, while also inspecting commercial and service facilities established beneath the elevated metro line.
Home to more than 6,700 residents across 45 apartment buildings and 1,620 flats, the mahalla has undergone phased infrastructure improvements. This includes the construction of 10 children's playgrounds, a mini-football field, and two outdoor fitness zones.
During the visit, the president toured a newly constructed, modern cogeneration center designed to secure a stable supply of heat and electricity for the neighborhood during the autumn-winter season. Cogeneration technology generates electricity from natural gas while capturing the resulting heat to supply hot water and space heating for residential buildings, improving overall energy efficiency and reducing distribution losses.
The project cost US$5.8 million and is outfitted with German-made gas-piston units and boilers. Its design capacity reaches 18.4 million kWh of electricity and 80,000 gigacalories of thermal energy annually.
The project also included the construction of a two-kilometer high-voltage transmission line connected to the national power grid. According to data presented to the president, this connection has lowered the peak load on the district's central power grid by 3%. The commissioning of the facility has created 10 permanent jobs.
Simultaneously, extensive landscaping has been completed in the mahalla, including the construction of 1.4 kilometers of pedestrian walkways, facade renovations for 12 apartment blocks, resurfacing of local roads, and the planting of 2,720 ornamental trees and shrubs.
Meeting with the mahalla's leadership team and active residents, the head of state emphasized that these large-scale projects are designed to build a comfortable, safe, and modern living environment. The president noted that the transformation of the Sergeli district originally began with the construction of the modern elevated metro line, the success of which is today mirrored by broader local development and rising living standards.
Furthermore, Shavkat Mirziyoyev observed the creative utilization of the urban space directly beneath the elevated metro line. Covering a 5.7-hectare area, this sub-viaduct zone hosts 137 small businesses and has generated 250 new jobs.
The space beneath the metro track has been repurposed to feature four kilometers of pedestrian and bicycle paths, two children's playgrounds, and active sports zones. For community recreation, 100 benches and 40 modern decorative streetlights have been installed.
