Portugal and Switzerland Advance to World Cup Round of 16

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The national teams of Portugal and Switzerland won their round of 32 matches at the football World Cup and advanced to the next round of the tournament.

The Portuguese team defeated Croatia with a score of 2-1, managing to overturn the course of the match after conceding a goal. In the 53rd minute, Croatian national team midfielder Ivan Perisic opened the scoring. Portugal then responded with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, who converted a penalty in the 68th minute, and Goncalo Ramos, who brought his team victory in stoppage time in the 94th minute.

It is noted that this victory was the first comeback win for the Portugal national team at the World Cup in the last 60 years. The last time the team won a world championship match after trailing during the game was in the quarterfinals of the 1966 World Cup against the national team of North Korea, which ended 5-3.

In the round of 16, Portugal will face Spain. The match will take place on 6 July 2026.

The Switzerland national team also secured its advancement to the round of 16 by defeating the Algeria team with a score of 2-0. The match took place in Vancouver.

Breel Embolo scored the first goal in the 10th minute following a pass from Joan Manzambi. Immediately after the break, in the 46th minute, Dan Ndoye increased the Swiss team's advantage.

The Swiss controlled the course of the match and created several more dangerous moments but were unable to increase the score. The Algerian team failed to create a serious threat to the opponent's goal and ended its performance at the tournament.
