Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — India has urged students planning to pursue medical degrees in Uzbekistan to carefully check universities and their programmes to ensure they meet the requirements of the country's National Medical Commission (NMC).
The Indian government is continuing discussions with Uzbekistan on the education of Indian students, including those enrolled in medical programmes. New Delhi wants to ensure that the education they receive complies with NMC standards, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
Jaiswal made the remarks during a regular media briefing in New Delhi on Tuesday, responding to a question about the decline in the number of Indian citizens enrolling in MBBS programmes in Uzbekistan.
He said India was maintaining contact with the Uzbek authorities and recommended that prospective students consult guidance published by the Indian Embassy in Tashkent and the National Medical Commission. The recommendations cover admission to medical programmes not only in Uzbekistan but also in other countries.
The spokesperson stressed that the Indian government attaches particular importance to the quality of medical education and protecting students from potential exploitation by unscrupulous intermediaries and other individuals, both in India and abroad.
In April, the NMC issued guidance for Indian applicants planning to pursue undergraduate medical education in Uzbekistan. The commission referred to cases in which Indian citizens had enrolled in private medical colleges abroad whose programmes and study conditions did not meet the requirements established in India.
The NMC urged prospective students to verify the status of educational institutions and avoid enrolling in unauthorised establishments or programmes that do not comply with regulatory standards.
The commission warned that failure to meet the established requirements could result in the refusal to register a medical qualification in India.
The mandatory criteria include the duration of study, language of instruction, curriculum content, the volume of clinical training, and the conditions for completing an internship or clinical practice.
