Chamber of Commerce Outlines 35-Year Economic Growth Indicators

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan has presented key socio-economic indicators tracking the country's development since independence, comparing figures across various periods from 1991 to 2026.

According to data released by the chamber, Uzbekistan's resident population grew from 20.6 million people in 1991 to 38.2 million as of 1 January 2026.

The country's gross domestic product expanded from US$6.4 billion in 1994 to US$147.1 billion in 2025. Over the same period, total foreign trade turnover reached US$82.8 billion, compared with US$3.3 billion recorded in 1991.

Exports rose to US$34.2 billion in 2025, up from an estimated US$1.8 billion in 1991. Total investment volume increased from US$1.1 billion in 1991 to US$48.5 billion in 2025.

Significant growth was also recorded in industrial output and construction. Industrial production expanded from US$3 billion in 1991 to US$87.5 billion in 2025, while the total volume of construction work increased from US$611 million in 1995 to US$25 billion in 2025.

The nation's educational infrastructure expanded over the post-independence era. The number of higher education institutions grew from 52 during the 1991/1992 academic year to 215 in the 2025/2026 academic year. The number of general secondary education schools rose from 8,557 to 11,118 over the same period.

Healthcare infrastructure and public health metrics also registered gains. The number of hospitals increased from 1,388 in 1991 to 1,972 in 2024. Average life expectancy grew from 66.4 years in 1991 to 75.4 years in 2025.

Household ownership of durable goods changed substantially over recent decades. In 2010, there were 21 automobiles per 100 households, a figure that reached 61 per 100 households by 2025. Mobile phone ownership grew from 145 units per 100 households in 2010 to 359 units in 2025.

Tourism figures showed marked expansion, rising from 1.9 million tourist arrivals in 2012 to 11.7 million visitors in 2025.

The total number of operating enterprises and organizations recorded as of 1 January increased from 201,000 in 2010 to 474,900 in 2025.
