Canada Beats South Africa 1-0 to Reach World Cup Round of 16
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Canada national football team secured a narrow 1-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup Round of 32. The match, held at a stadium in Los Angeles, allowed the Canadian team to become the first official participants to advance to the next knockout round.
No goals were scored during regular time, and the fate of the berth in the next stage was decided at the very end of stoppage time. Midfielder Stephen Eustaquio scored the decisive goal in the second minute of second-half injury time (90+2). A significant event for the Canadians was also the return of team captain Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich defender, who had missed previous games due to an injury, made his first appearance of the tournament by coming off the substitutes' bench in the 74th minute of the match.
Both teams achieved historical milestones in the current tournament, as neither South Africa nor Canada had ever previously reached the knockout stage of a World Cup. Following the group stage, the North American side finished second in Group B, while the South African team occupied the same position in Group A.
Notably, South Africa's 74-year-old Belgian head coach, Hugo Broos, set an age record by becoming the oldest head coach to manage a team in a knockout match in World Cup history. The previous record belonged to Oscar Tabarez, who managed Uruguay in 2018 at the age of 71. Additionally, the Canadian team established a unique precedent by becoming the first tournament co-host to play a match outside its own country.
In the upcoming Round of 16, Canada will face the winner of the match between the Netherlands and Morocco. This second-round knockout fixture involving the Canadian team is scheduled for July 4 in Houston. The current World Cup is co-hosted by three nations — the United States, Canada, and Mexico — with the final match for the title, currently held by defending champions Argentina, scheduled for July 19.
