Bamyan Tests Fontane Potato Variety From Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Initial results from cultivating the high-yielding Fontane potato variety in Afghanistan's Bamyan Province have been assessed positively. Experimental plantings covering a total area of 17 hectares are being conducted as part of agricultural cooperation between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.

The fields are located in the Shahidan, Foladi, and central districts of Bamyan. The potatoes are intended for export and industrial processing.

Representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan inspected the crops, evaluating their condition, the quality of the seed material, and the cultivation methods used. Practical consultations on increasing yields were also held with local specialists.

According to preliminary observations, the plants are developing well, with an expected yield of about 40–45 tonnes per hectare.

The Fontane variety is used to produce French fries and other processed products, featuring high yield and strong storage durability, the report states.

If the experimental project is implemented successfully, the parties plan to expand cooperation. In the future, potential supplies of up to 300,000 tonnes of potatoes per year from Bamyan to Uzbekistan are under consideration.

The project is expected to contribute to the development of agricultural cooperation between the two countries, the introduction of modern agricultural technologies, and the strengthening of food security.
