Uzbekistan's Population Tops 38.5 Million as Births Fall

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan's permanent population reached 38.5195 million as of 1 July 2026, up 1.7% from a year earlier, the National Statistics Committee said.

The urban population stood at 19.6089 million, or 50.9% of the total, while the rural population amounted to 18.9106 million, or 49.1%. Women accounted for 49.6% of the population, or 19.1189 million people, and men for 50.4%, or 19.4006 million. Population density increased to 85.8 people per square kilometre from 84.3 a year earlier.

Among the regions, Surkhandarya Region and the city of Tashkent recorded the highest population growth, at 2.1% each. The Republic of Karakalpakstan posted the lowest increase, at 1.0%.

During January–June 2026, 373,400 children were born in Uzbekistan, down by 32,100 from the same period of 2025. The birth rate stood at 19.6 per 1,000 population. The number of deaths increased by 2,800 to 86,900, while the mortality rate was 4.6 per 1,000 population. Natural population growth totalled 286,500 during the first half of the year.

Among newborns, 51.7% were boys and 48.3% were girls, while 51% were born in rural areas. Men accounted for 55.6% of all deaths, and 54.4% of those who died lived in urban areas.

A total of 92,300 marriages were registered during January–June, down by 3,000 from a year earlier, while the number of divorces increased by 1,500 to 24,800. The marriage rate stood at 4.9 per 1,000 population and the divorce rate at 1.3 per 1,000. Most marriages, 51.1%, were registered in urban areas, which also accounted for 60.1% of all divorces.

The total number of arrivals during the first half of the year reached 185,600 people, including 183,921 internal migrants and 1,649 international arrivals. A total of 189,300 people left their place of residence, including 5,422 who departed the country. The largest inflow of internal migrants was recorded in the city of Tashkent, with 63,400 arrivals, followed by Tashkent Region with 26,900.

The statistics were compiled using integrated data from the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Internal Affairs ahead of the publication of the final results of the national population census scheduled for 1 July 2027.
