Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbekistan has commissioned the 20 MW Charvak wind power plant in Bostanlyk district of Tashkent region, with the project supported by a US$28 million grant from the Chinese government, JSC UzHydroEnergo said.

The plant was commissioned on 20 August. The opening ceremony was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Uzbekistan Yu Jun, representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, energy and construction companies, UzHydroEnergo management and employees, representatives of the Tashkent region and Bostanlyk district hokimiyats, local activists and media.

The project includes four wind turbines, each with a capacity of 5 MW. The plant’s total installed capacity is 20 MW, while annual electricity generation could reach 50 million kWh.

According to UzHydroEnergo, this amount of electricity is sufficient to supply nearly 20,000 households. The plant will also help reduce pressure on electricity networks and improve the stability of the power system.

Construction and installation work was carried out as part of the project, the necessary engineering infrastructure was prepared, the plant was connected to the electricity grid and modern wind turbines were installed.

The project is being presented as another result of cooperation between Uzbekistan and China. The Chinese side provided a US$28 million grant for its implementation.

UzHydroEnergo expects operation of the plant to reduce annual consumption of natural gas and coal, as well as greenhouse gas emissions. The company links the project to the development of environmentally sustainable energy and the reduction of the country’s carbon footprint.

The ceremony also included the results of the “Wind Power Plant Through the Eyes of Young Artists” competition. Works by graduates of the P. Benkov Republican Specialized Art School were recognized, while winners and participants received certificates of merit and commemorative gifts from UzHydroEnergo.

The Charvak wind power plant was commissioned ahead of the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s state independence.
