Uzbekistan Discusses PPP at Washington Roundtable

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A roundtable dedicated to global experience in public-private partnership (PPP) was held in Washington as part of the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund. The event took place on 16 April and was organized by the Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy at Georgetown University.

The discussion brought together representatives of international financial institutions, investment banks, major infrastructure companies, and government agencies. Among the participants was Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan Ilkhomjon Umrzakov, who presented information on ongoing economic reforms in the country, the development of PPP mechanisms, the attraction of private investment, and financing of infrastructure projects.

During the discussions, participants focused on key challenges in implementing PPP projects. These included political and regulatory risks, currency and financial constraints, demand uncertainty, as well as environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

Special attention was given to international experience in PPP implementation, mechanisms for expanding private sector participation, and the role of international financial institutions in reducing risks and improving project efficiency.

Following the roundtable, recommendations were developed aimed at improving PPP models in the infrastructure sector, strengthening cooperation between banks and institutional investors, and enhancing the quality of project preparation and implementation.

The platform was noted as an important venue for experience-sharing between countries and financial institutions and is considered significant for developing economies, including Uzbekistan, in the context of attracting private capital and supporting economic growth.
