Uzbekistan and Japan Discuss Cooperation in Nuclear Energy
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — On 13 August, the Uzatom Agency held talks with a Japanese delegation comprising representatives of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and ITOCHU Corporation. The agency reported this.
The Japanese delegation was led by Eimitsu Abe, Deputy Director of the Office for International Cooperation on Nuclear Energy at METI.
The meeting focused on developing bilateral cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, strengthening energy security, and prospects for joint projects in nuclear technologies and related sectors.
The participants confirmed their interest in further developing partnerships and exchanging experience between Uzbekistan and Japan in the field of nuclear energy.
Eimitsu Abe said Japan highly values reforms being carried out in Uzbekistan to modernize the economy and develop the energy sector. He said Japan was ready to continue dialogue and cooperation with Uzbek partners on the peaceful use of nuclear energy based on mutual respect and shared interests.
Uzatom said it would continue expanding international cooperation with countries and organizations possessing advanced experience in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
According to the agency, Uzbekistan’s cooperation with Japanese partners in the nuclear sector is long-term. ITOCHU Corporation is implementing agreements on the supply of uranium concentrate with Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Company, while JOGMEC is involved in the development of uranium deposits.
During the President of Uzbekistan’s visit to Japan in December 2025, the sides confirmed prospects for further expanding cooperation, including the export of critical minerals and the introduction of advanced technologies.
